Mr. Driskill reading to students in Mrs. Day’s class. Thank You Mr. Driskill for giving your generous time to our Addison students.
Ms. Davis had Shane Morse and Jim O’Brien from the DNR as guest speakers today for my 7th and 8th grade math classes. They talked about how they use math daily in their job. They covered topics such as ratios, angles, proportions, integers, measurement and conversion, equations, inequalities, area, volume, and slope. Also Ray Fahlsing who is manager of the Stewardship Unit for Michigan State Parks. My unit is responsible for cultural (historic, archaeological , ethnological) and natural resources within Michigan State Parks. We use mathematics in many practical ways, budgets, mixing herbicide and calculating herbicide application rates (calibrating sprayers), estimating project costs, calculating home range size of box turtles, calculating the value of trees cut in a timber trespass, etc. He spoke about about how he uses math to meet his budget, how to use ratios and proportions to mix herbicide, how to set a drill for planting seeds, tractor speed and spraying, and how to calculate when to have a controlled burn. (just some topics) He also had a falcon and used him to talk about math as well.
